Russian Furniture Prices Set to Surge Amid Increased Import Tariffs
On November 28, the Association of Furniture and Woodworking Enterprises of Russia (AMDPR) announced that Russian furniture prices could rise significantly due to a steep increase in tariffs on Chinese furniture hardware. The tariffs, which target imports through Vladivostok Customs, have jumped from 0% to 55.65%. This move primarily affects essential components like sliding rails, which are now reclassified as bearings. These parts, accounting for up to 30% of some furniture’s cost, are critical for production. AMDPR President Alexander Shestakov expressed concern, noting Russia’s complete dependence on imports for these items, predominantly from China.
Industry Warns of Severe Consequences and Calls for Government Action
The new tariff policy could have severe implications, including potential bankruptcies among furniture hardware importers. The retrospective nature of the tariffs, applying to imports dating back to 2021, further exacerbates the financial burden. Critics highlight the disparity in tariff increases, with similar European imports facing only a 10% hike. This discrepancy has raised concerns over potential unfair treatment of Chinese suppliers. Several Russian furniture companies have formally appealed to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, urging government intervention. Experts caution that the tariff hike could strain China-Russia trade relations and advocate for dialogue to resolve the issue.
